Consensus: That Is A Stupid Sign
Time for the Weekly Poll recap. The Question: You see a sign reading: “End 45 Speed Limit.†How fast should you drive?
- I’m worried about the 19% of you who decided it doesn’t matter how fast you drive.
- Another nineteen percent said driving 55 MPH was appropriate.
- And the majority, at 62% decided this is a stupid sign.
I love you guys. You know how to tell it like it is. However, it’s more likely true that the correct answer is to drive 55 MPH. I will say though that the California Driver’s Handbook doesn’t even mention “End Speed Limit” signs, and it’s not listed in the sign examples. The closest we come to an answer is this paragraph from the “Speed Limits” section:
The maximum speed limit on most California highways is 65 mph. You may drive 70 mph where posted. Unless otherwise posted, the maximum speed limit is 55 mph on two-lane undivided highways and for vehicles towing trailers.
But then let’s take into account that yesterday, while approaching a stop sign, I saw an “End 45 Speed Limit” sign. So I charged at that dead end at 55 miles per hour. In any case, I’ll stick with my complaint that good money was wasted on signs that tell me what the speed limit is NOT, instead of telling me what it IS.
Thanks for putting up with me.
