Like The Trees

In 2001, my first summer on staff at Calvin Crest, a man named Todd Holdridge brought up a group of high school students who he had met about a week before. He was their new youth pastor, and it was an extreme pleasure to be a part of their getting to know one another.

Tonight, while taking the junior high camp photo, I saw Todd. He told me that Lyndsay and I were “becoming like the trees,” permanent installations. At first I thought, “Man, what does that mean? Is it time to move on?” But I know that he meant it as a compliment, and I’ll take it as such. Besides, there are those who have been here much longer than we have, whose usefulness and relevancy are not nearly waning.

witnessed two students (who used to run at my feet) partner with a ‘little girl’ (who used to get my nightly eye rubs) this past Sunday as they led a community of believers in worship. i was ‘planted’ in the balcony with my leaves dropping with pleasure at the sight. That can only happen when you become like the trees and can watch the forest floor rise up to look you in the eye. More and more i am seeing eyeballs, shaking my head at how fast they got there…and wondering if i have done my part. SOMEHOW…it ties into seeing the time machine. TODAY!

Never count your money when you’re sitting at the table.
There’ll be time enough for countin’ when the dealing is done.

I think you’re dogwoods. The ones that awe you with beauty, that somehow constantly remind you that life, thru its many seasons, is worth living.

It’s nice to visit places we’ve been before where things are changing, but not everything especially good people…
