So What I Meant To Say Was…

A couple days ago I posted a picture of some bumper stickers on the back of a car we saw at Disneyland.

One sticker was advertising KLOVE.
I don’t mind Christian radio (mostly).

The second exhorted us to PRAY for the USA.
I should be doing more of that.

The last sticker presented us the charge: “Annoy A Liberal.”
Why else would I have taken the picture?

In no way did I mean to single out this apparently politically-conservative lover of Jesus Christ. Even if I wanted to, I have no idea who this person is. Rather, I wanted to say that I’m bored with a Church that believes:

KLOVE + Patriotism + Republicans = Christianity

I am not saying this person represents the whole Church. But it sure isn’t the first time I’ve seen something like this from Us. Why do we often place our political party of choice on the top shelf right next to (and sometimes on top of) our desire to be followers of Jesus? I’m all for politics, but a big yellow sticker reading “Annoy A Liberal” next to your “Pray For the USA” and “I Listen to KLOVE” is not exactly an invitation to the Seeker Service.

Just to clarify, I don’t believe any of the following are true:

KLOVE + Patriotism + Democrats = Christianity
KLOVE + Patriotism = Christianity
KLOVE = Christianity
Patriotism = Christianity

My motivation for writing such a succinct, blatant, and even slightly cutting remark about “How To Be A Christian” is because I think some believe that is really how you do it.

Recently Brad and I went to a wedding where our friend the groom–who is not a ‘christian’ whispered concern to me because Jesus had been mentioned in the ceremony. “I’m just worried some of my homosexual friends will be insulted,” he said.

I mention this because when I read this good post earlier I thought the only bumper sticker that was missing was the one that shows the red circle with the line across it over two men holding hands and then quotes a bunch of scripture.

Somewhere along the way people who believe in Jesus have become equated with people who hate. And offend. To the point where Jesus gets the blame.

You might have added ‘+Gay-Haters’ to your equation.

So there’s my rant. I’m done now.

I don’t think Timbo should backpedal from his original statement at all. I mean, faulting a Christian for his divisive bumper sticker displayed next to “stickers for Christ”! That’s just plain divisive. Can we, as Christians, forget the hypercritical social commentary from now on? We should expect better from ourselves–by which I mean dispassionate devotion to the status quo.

Cory, simply exlplained what is a Christian from your point of view? I have found it is easy to define what we are not, but I get all discombobulated when I explain what we are. Perhaps, this is because I have such a hard time with the institution of Christianity. I would say a Christian is someone who is in a love realtionship with Jesus. But perhaps I have oversimplified, or perhaps the simplified answer is the right one even though it does not necessarily convey the depth of what this statement means. What do you think?

Janice, I’m not going to ignore your question.
I’d just like to give a more well thought-out response than the randomness that is currently rolling around in my brain.

I think that “anarchism = Christianity” is a good way to think about it… but not because of it is the “right” form of government but precisely that there is no “right” form of governing body…all are going to be infinitely insufficient in comparison to the coming kingdom of God… Perhaps as political governing bodies change so does the christian church and maybe the christian?… One thing i think that we can be sure of is that God, a majority of the time, is set against the empire of the period (and if he uses the empire it seems to be a big shock to everyone in israel… e.g. jeremiah). Maybe equating Capitalism, or Representative Democracy or Communism or Feudalism with God’s way is a little presumptuous.I think we can be sure to say that of political parties… but maybe i am wrong and america is the new jerusalem? and iraq is babylon… if that is true won’t my face be red…

What he wrote was just satire.
