Mother Teresa Was An Atheist
Well, at least that’s the headline I clicked on to get to this story about the famous nun’s personal letters confessing her doubts about her faith.
I like her even more now.

I saw the story on the evening news. I don’t know why it’s “shocking” to think that someone who worked with impoverished folks for most of her life had deep questions about justice and God. It would seem more problematic, to my way of thinking, if she never confronted those doubts…

I was deeply moved by the revelation of this pervasive chapter of her life. A good portion of my faith journey was made more clear to me by the writings on the dark night of soul spirituality. I greatly appreciate the opportunity to hear of this decades long service of faith and action over and against the lack of feelings and sense of presence of God in her life.
Were I to live a day with the kind of life long faith she manifested not only in her service, but in her steadfastness in the midst of darkness.
